For over a century, the central goals of Canada’s Aboriginal policy were to eliminate Aboriginal governments; ignore Aboriginal rights; terminate the Treaties; and, through a process of assimilation, cause Aboriginal peoples to cease to exist as distinct legal, social, cultural, religious, and racial entities in Canada. The establishment and operation of residential schools were a central element of this policy, which can best be described as “cultural genocide.” (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2015, p. 1) True reconciliation requires building a vision of Canada, in which Indigenous worldviews are reflected, respected, and play a crucial role in how we govern and organize our collective lives, and in how Indigenous peoples can choose to live their lives. This is essential to responding to discrimination, systemic racism, and privilege. Exclusion, marginalization of Indigenous worldviews is at the core of racism and privilege. It means that social patterns and Institutions are built in ways to exclude Indigenous peoples, make it harder for them to participate and create environments that are culturally, supportive, or safe.
